Lactic acidosis (increased levels of lactic acid in the blood) may be characterized by initial symptoms of malaise, muscle aches, breathing difficulty, increased sedation, abdominal distress. Report any of these symptoms to your doctor immediately.
If you are a diabetic, follow the diet and exercise plan as prescribed by your doctor.
Notify your doctor if you have impaired kidney or liver function. May require monitoring of kidney function.
This drug needs to be temporarily stopped if you are having surgery or a procedure that requires the administration of a contrast dye. Discuss the best possible way to do this with your doctor.

Discuss the aspects of diet and exercise and regular testing of blood glucose. Avoid excessive alcohol intake. The extended release tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. This drug has a black box warning regarding the risk of developing lactic acidosis.
