Tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea pedis; onychomycosis due to dermatophytes; cutaneous candidiasis; tinea versicolor; active against Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum

DRUG CLASS
Anti-infective/Antifungal

DESCRIPTION
Lamisil is indicated for the treatment of a fungal infection of fingernails and toenails due to tinea unguium. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme, squalene oxidase which blocks the synthesis of bacterial and fungal cell walls thus preventing growth.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Lamisil tablets may cause stomach and bowel upsets, changes in taste, headache, and aches or pains in the muscles and joints. If either preparation causes a rash a doctor should be consulted, as treatment may need to be discontinued if the rash worsens.

CAUTIONS
  • Children <12 (safety and efficacy not established).
  • Terbinafine should be used with caution by people with chronic liver disease or impaired kidney function.
  • Use with caution in psoriasis.

Caffeine, cimetidine, cyclosporine, dextromethorphan, rifampin.

PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
Pregnancy category B; it is recommended that treatment of onychomycosis be delayed until after pregnancy; small amounts of terbinafine are excreted into breast milk when administered orally, not recommended in nursing mothers; avoid application to the breast when breast feeding

  • Take at regular intervals. Complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
  • Make sure you take this medicine regularly and complete the course as directed by your doctor. It is important to complete the course, even if your symptoms have cleared up, otherwise there is a risk of the infection returning. If there are no signs of improvement after two weeks, consult your doctor.
