DRUG CLASS
Antihypertensive (beta-blocker)

DESCRIPTION
This drug decreases heart rate, cardiac contractility, blood pressure, and the heart’s oxygen demand.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Decreased heart rate, drowsiness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, edema, congestive heart failure, reduced peripheral circulation, mental depression, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, bronchospasm.

CAUTIONS
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart conditions (such as congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock, too low heart rate, or second- and third-degree heart block, sinus node dysfunction), are pregnant, or have lung/breathing problems,
  • Do not stop this medication suddenly; taper over a gradual period.
  • May cause or mask the symptoms of low blood glucose levels in diabetics.
  • May mask signs of thyroid problems.
  • Not indicated for high blood pressure emergencies.
  • Immediately report to your doctor any signs of swelling of the extremities, sudden weight gain, changes in breathing, night cough.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Barbiturates, cholestyramine, colestipol, rifampin, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, oral contraceptives, diphenhydramine, flecainide, hydralazine, hydroxychloroquine, MAO inhibitors, NSAIDs, propafenone, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, etc.), quinidine, ciprofloxacin, thyroid hormones, clonidine, epinephrine, ergot alkaloids, lidocaine, prazosin, oral sulfonylureas (drugs used to treat diabetes)

FOOD INTERACTIONS
Take at the same time each day.

HERBAL INTERACTIONS
Dong quai, ephedra, yohimbe, ginseng, garlic

PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
FDA Pregnancy Risk Category C (manufacturer), D second and third trimesters (expert analysis). Excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
This drug has a black box warning regarding the avoidance of abrupt withdrawal in those with heart disease.
