ORIGINAL USES (ON-LABEL)
Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers, maintenance treatment of healed duodenal ulcers, part of H. pylori treatment regimen, treatment of gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and hypersecretory (increased gastric acid secretion) conditions (such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)

DRUG CLASS
Gastrointestinal (proton pump inhibitor)

DESCRIPTION
Lansoprazole decreases gastric acid secretion by inhibiting an intracellular “acid” (proton) pump, which is the final step in gastric acid production.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS
Diarrhea, abdominal pain.

CAUTIONS

• Dosage reductions may be required in severe liver dysfunction.

DRUG INTERACTIONS
Carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, atazanavir, indinavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, warfarin, ampicillin, clarithromycin, digoxin

FOOD INTERACTIONS
Avoid cranberry juice.

HERBAL INTERACTIONS
Ginkgo biloba

PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING CAUTIONS
FDA Pregnancy Risk Category B. Excretion in breast milk unknown. Breast-feeding is not recommended.

Lansoprazole works best if taken before eating, especially before breakfast.
